Day 2. Antibes

I’m back with the second part of our short visit on the Cote d’Azur.

If on our first day we enjoyed the sun on the Croisette in Cannes, on the second day the weather was a little more capricious and slipped us a few short showers. Once we arrived in the port area of Antibes, we started walking towards the old town. Founded by the Greeks, who named it Acropolis, this small town truly breathes the poetry of the sea. Given its exit to the Mediterranean, everything is connected to the sea here: the commerce, the gastronomy, the market… even Pablo Picasso felt inspired by the charm of the once small fishing village and moved his studio here in 1946.

In 1966, the Picasso Museum becomes the most important touristic attraction in the area, being hosted by the Grimaldi Castle. The impressive collection includes 23 paintings, 33 drawings, 78 ceramic pieces and 27 lithographs. Fleeing the grey skies of the Nazi war, here in Antibes Picasso has regained the joy of living. He moved to Antibes with his family, right in the castle, which he intended to buy. The sea, the sun, the light and the quiet life in Antibes fascinated him and served as inspiration for his creations.

At the exit from the museum we were greeted by some sprinkles of rain, although it was sunny, so we opened our umbrellas and got lost on the streets of the old town. Our guide tells us about an experience specific to this area that we were going to try later that day, namely drinking absinth (or tasting, in our case). But not before a little walk through the local market, which included all sorts of goodies from this area: lavender, spices, soaps, cheese, pastries, crafts and souvenirs.

It is said that travelling the Riviera means tasting as many fish soups as possible. I say that the moderately roasted duck breast I had for lunch that day fully compensated the lack of fish soups, which I intend not to miss the next time I will visit the Cote d’Azur.

Farmecul acestui mic orasel consta anume in simplitatea si autenticitatea sa…

This little town’s charm lies exactly in its simplicity and authenticity… You don’t need a car or a map to cross it. It is a quiet and clean place, full of history.

After the a la carte lunch, which included the traditional foie-gras, we headed to our final destination – Nice. The famous annual “King of Media” festival takes place here, but I will tell you more about it in a future post.
