Santorini, as you have never seen it

But what the hell, nu toate vacantele in Grecia trebuie sa presupuna leneveala si multa mancare, nu-i asa?

FIRA

Initial voiam sa mergem in Santorini in luna mai, insa primul zbor direct charter  Bucuresti-Thira (Santorini) a fost pe 31 mai. Ce am facut o saptamana intreaga in Santorini?

Santorini is a destination I’ve been meaning to visit for a few years. After many stories heard from other people, it even became sort of a controversial topic. The opinions were divided between ‘it’s just some rocks’ and ‘you’ll fall in love with that place and you’ll want to go back over and over’. There is no middle ground. So it’s a destination that you either love or think is overrated. But what the hell, not all holidays in Greece have to include laying around and eating lots of food, right?

We initially wanted to go to Santorini in May, but the first charter flight from Bucharest to Thira (Santorini) was on May 31. What did we do for a whole week in Santorini? Only half of what we had planned. I admit that I’ve cheated and spent around 3 days at the beach and by the pool, because I was craving some tan, but every evening, without exception, we watched the gorgeous sunset from the famous island of Santorini, either from Oia, Fira or Imerovigli, the three main villages on the island.

Both Fira and Oia are beautiful and full of terraces, stores and breathtaking views, but you can’t visit just one, because each has its own charm.

As soon as we arrived, we rented a car, which I recommend if you plan to spend even a few days in Santorini, because it’s not more expensive than on other Greek islands, while the cab kind of breaks the bank. From one village to another it can cost up to 50 euros. Plus, the island is quite small, around 80 square km, and it only has one main road, so it’s hard to get lost. We’ve found accommodation in Kamari, a very nice resort with ok prices, one of the largest beaches on the island, lots of terraces and stores and only 4 km away from the airport. I’m saying ok prices because in Oia and Fira the prices are double or even higher at every hotel and restaurant. That’s because the views are absolutely ravishing. 🙂

Although not as famous, Imerovigli is a small extension of Fira, placed on a higher crest, with a gorgeous view over Fira and Caldera, the crater of the long gone volcano, currently found under water. A small parenthesis for those who are curious about the history of this unique island: the island of Santorini, situated in the south of the Cyclades archipelago, was formed after the greatest natural disaster in the history of mankind – the eruption of a volcano that buried the Minoan civilization in ashes more than 3,600 years ago. I can’t believe that after so many cataclysms, this beautiful island, unique in the world thanks to its atypical landscape, has appeared.

Asa e peste tot in Santorini  la plajele publice. Fair enough!

Back to Kamari, the resort where we stayed, I can say I highly recommend it. It’s a pretty big resort and has the largest beach on the island. Let me remind you that there are no sandy beaches in Santorini, so don’t bother looking for them. There are only beaches with pebbles and many swimming pools!

For 2 days we stayed on the beach in Kamari, where we enjoyed pizza (8 – 10 euros), seafood (15 – 20 euros), lemonade and other natural juices (4 – 6 euro), and the sunbed was included in the price. It’s like this at every public beach in Santorini. Fair enough!

One of the iconic landmarks in Santorini, the little white churches with blue roofs, are everywhere. But the one below, which is featured in all Pinterest pictures and on all possible paintings and calendars, we’ve only located after a few days of search. But it was worth it, the view is like taken from a painting, too bad for the tourists that are always spoiling the scenery. 🙂

Despite the fact that we visited the island in early June, it was filled with tourists and lots of bustle. Just like the temperature – the weather app showed 23 degrees, but I can honestly say that it felt like 30 – I can only imagine how it feels now, in July… it’s probably unbearably hot! And probably twice as crowded!

As a general impression, although almost one month has passed since I came back from Santorini, I can honestly say that it was absolutely gorgeous, it’s a wonderful and unique place, it has a certain vibe and it’s practically impossible not to fall in love with it! I look at these images and I wonder when I will have the opportunity to return. 🙂 And to figure out for yourselves how beautiful this place is, I’ll leave you with a video that speaks a thousand words!

Hey!

Stupid fucking women, always posing in front of fifth-rate tourist destinations like Santorini, Cinque Terre, Positano, etc. If it wasn’t for the tag, I would have thought you all were in AFGHANISTAN.
